No not Blair! Him!

One last bit from yesterday's pro-DD S Torygraph:

'A panel of floating voters, aged between 45 and 60, was asked: "If there was an election tomorrow, who would you vote for?" At one end of the room, a photograph of Tony Blair was displayed. Placed at the other end was a picture of one of the leading candidates for the Conservative Party leadership.

Without missing a beat, they all raised their arms and pointed at the picture of the Conservative. "Not Blair! Him! That one!"

And yes, the one in question was DD, who attracted an avalanche of praise:

"Davis is a people's person...not plummy, like Rifkind."

"He's up-and-coming. He's a determined man."

"He is the sort of bloke you can relate to."

"He has a calming manner."

"He is in total control."

All of which is excellent.

Excellent.

Certainly.

Except that...well, I dunno...it can't be that easy can it? In one bound they were free?

True, the younger age group (25 to 44) did prefer Cameron. Which sounds right.

And the other reported comments do ring true:

'[Osborne's] much too young to be the leader. But he looks 10 years older than 33. He needs a Trinny and Susannah makeover.'

'[Redwood] makes me cringe. Do you remember him mouthing the Welsh national anthem? Oh dear - I felt so sad for him...Deadwood! Mr Bean!'

'[Rifkind]...too old school...too plummy...He's the old image. He's what the Conservatives should be trying to get away from.'

'[Clarke]...lovely bedside manner - just like a doctor...friendly grandfather figure...I'd be frightened he would die.'

'[Fox]...fake grin.'

But those focus groups...I just don't know. And this was another one in Watford, with 20 floaters picked up off the street. They've now had so many focus groups in Watford, I should think most people on the street would just tell them where to insert another one.

I want to believe it, I really do.

But I reckon Dave's got a lot of peddling to do yet.
